The Family Scissorhands

One-sentence film reviews to pique your interest or save you hours of potentially wasted time. (Other observations are optional reading, and do not represent the opinions of WordPress.com or its affiliates.)

Today: Edward Scissorhands and The Family Stone.

Edward Scissorhands

One-sentence Review: This movie taught me that it’s okay to be a freak, as long as you pretend you’re dead and live up on a mountain, by yourself.

Other observations:

  • Having scissors for hands isn’t nearly as cool as you thought it would be.
  • I expected this movie to be a lot more interesting than it was.
  • “Look, ma! I can play a jack-ass too!” says Anthony Michael Hall.
  • I think I would have renamed this film, Peter Pankenstein.
  • The moral of this story is, of course, “Never help weird people — it will only backfire.”
  • Yes, I know this movie came out 17 years ago, but I just saw it, so shut up.

The Family Stone

One-sentence Review: Great actors + Great story + Great writing = one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Other observations:

  • It takes skill to get awkward family scenes to be that awkwardly awkward.
  • Craig T. Nelson, Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Claire Danes, and Luke Wilson are all excellent actors for their parts, and really took a great script and made it a thousand times better.
  • I’m not ashamed to admit that when everyone opens their gift from Meredith, I cry.
  • The ability to deal with tough, serious themes through the vehicle of awkward comedy pretty much defines my entire philosophy for liking movies (see The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited, Little Miss Sunshine, etc.

  1. i 100% agree with the family stone. dave watched it for the first time on sunday because it was on HBO. we’re planning to watch it again soon because he was distracted, but knew he loved it.

    i cry, too.

  2. Hey, have you seen Junebug? Talk about awkward family silence and tension!! It’s not as much of a comedy as the Family Stone but worth watching. A movie that Matt and I talked about a lot.
